Medical Detoxification

Medical detoxification services include the following substances: alcohol benzodiazepines, amphetamines, and opiates. Clients accepted for treatment usually have a mental health and / or substance abuse diagnosis. Clients may be voluntary or court ordered for the sole purpose of detoxification. Clients who are under 18 years of age or who have severe medical problems are not admitted. Clients for admission to the adult substance detox and rehab for primary purpose of detox must have appropriate referral from an outside agency.

Upon admission of an eligible client, psychiatric and nursing assessments are completed. The sources of information for these assessments consist of review of referral information, informant information, prior treatment records and interviews with the client and significant others. The nursing assessment is completed upon admission. In addition, a psychiatrist conducts a psychiatric evaluation and a nurse practitioner conducts a history and physical within 24 hours of admission. The purpose of these assessments is to provide a comprehensive clinical picture of the client that serves as the basis for determination of the diagnosis and individual treatment plan.

These services can only be provided if the level of dependence and the amount and type of substance does not require hospital-based services to address likely physical complications from withdrawal. If there is a disagreement as to the need for medical/hospital-based detoxification, the Medical Director will make the final determination.

Detoxification services may include the safe withdrawal from substances as well as a safe reduction in the amount of prescribed medication (from a previous unsafe amount). Treatment focuses on nursing observation, medication, short-term counseling and the introduction to Twelve Step cognitive and behavioral program principles of substance abuse. Upon discharge, referrals will be made to an outpatient setting for further assessment and possible Intensive Outpatient Treatment or Residential Treatment to address the dynamics of addiction and offer long-term treatment and support.

Client progress and problems are tracked daily through staff observation, chart documentation and treatment team reviews. Discharge planning begins upon admission and strives to include arrangements for appropriate aftercare and self-help approaches. Average length of stay is estimated to be seven days for detoxification. Any client may be re-admitted without restrictions providing they meet the admission criteria.
